January 9, 2020

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has appointed Kurt Thiede of Wisconsin as Region 5 administrator. Thiede will oversee the agency’s business in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Thiede’s appointment comes as former administrator Cathy Stepp leaves her post after several years with the EPA.

Formerly Stepp’s chief of staff, Thiede also worked for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for 18 years in various roles, including as deputy secretary. He has a bachelor of science in wildlife management and biology from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point.

“I’m humbled and honored to be selected by Administrator Wheeler to serve as the next Regional Administrator for EPA Region 5. I look forward to helping to continue to advance this administration’s priorities of protecting public health and the environment, while promoting a strong and vibrant economy,” said Thiede in a statement.
