TCE report “altered radically” at White House direction

March 4, 2020

The White House reportedly ordered the rewrite of a report that linked a chemical compound used in dry cleaning and as an industrial solvent to birth defects.

According to Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting, a 700-page draft report detailing the link between exposure to trace amounts of trichloroethylene, or TCE, and fetal heart malformations was rewritten at the behest of the White House to downplay the chemical compound’s toxicity.

Instead of basing an evaluation of TCE on a vast body of evidence verified by career U.S. Environmental Protection Agency scientists, the Trump administration reportedly based its published evaluation on a single study produced by a contract scientist and funded by two chemical trade associations.
