For those of us in Indianapolis, Christmas at the Indianapolis Zoo, presented by Indiana Members Credit Union, has become a cherished tradition that feels like a warm hug in the middle of winter.

As the event celebrates its 57th year in 2024, let me walk you through why this event holds a special place in so many hearts and what you can expect when you visit.

A Holiday Legacy Since 1967

Over the years, Christmas at the Indianapolis Zoo has transformed into a must-see spectacle, bringing together families, friends, and even couples for a night of enchantment.

Every year, Christmas at the Indianapolis Zoo ups the ante with fresh experiences. For 2024, the spotlight shines on Santa’s Magic Cottage, a cozy retreat brought to life by Peterman Brothers.

Nestled in Santa’s Village under the Bicentennial Pavilion, it’s not just a stop—it’s an adventure.

You’ll find yourself whisked away on an immersive journey to the North Pole, where you can meet Mrs. Claus, chat with Santa’s cheerful elves, and, of course, share a moment with the big guy himself. Santa’s study feels straight out of a storybook, making it a perfect backdrop for photos.

Here’s a tip: IMCU members can skip the line Monday through Thursday if they show their card before 5:00 PM.

A Sensory-Friendly Twist for Inclusivity

For families with sensory sensitivities, Christmas at the Indianapolis Zoo has created a welcoming environment with Sensory-Friendly Events. Scheduled for December 3 and December 10, this thoughtful adaptation ensures everyone can soak up the magic without feeling overwhelmed.

Some key adjustments include:

  • Softer music or no music at all.
  • Solid lights replacing flashing ones where possible.
  • Warning signs in areas where changes couldn’t be made.
  • Thematic smells turned off.
Even the animal presentations are tailored, with reduced noise levels and minimal light changes. For guests needing a moment of calm, the HIX Institute offers a dedicated quiet room, complete with KultureCity sensory bags and lap pads.
