Indianapolis, IN – Construction on the $43 million Henry Street Bridge over the White River will officially start next week, the city of Indianapolis announced Thursday. This new bridge will play a crucial role in connecting a major new business park on the west side of the river to downtown, including the new $200 million headquarters for Elanco Animal Health Inc.
Terre Haute-based Garmong Construction is in charge of building the bridge under an agreement with the city. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2026. Work started earlier this year with the installation of water mains and other utilities on the west side of the river.
However, construction has faced complications due to the discovery of historic cemeteries on the east side of the river.
The Greenlawn Cemetery, dating back to the 19th century, is located in the path of the bridge. The city estimates over 650 graves may need to be moved during construction, with the process expected to cost more than $12 million. Excavation of the graves will begin this fall, pending approval from the State Historic Preservation Office.
As construction begins, several roads and pathways will be affected. Starting Tuesday, September 3, the White River Greenway will be closed between Kentucky Avenue and Washington Street.
Meanwhile, talks continue between the city and Keystone Group, which owns land near the construction site. Keystone had previously planned a $1 billion development, including a soccer stadium, but those plans were set aside in favor of a new Major League Soccer expansion club and stadium site. Negotiations over the future of the site are ongoing.
Despite the challenges, city officials are committed to moving forward with the Henry Street Bridge project. They say it will be built with care and will serve as an important connection for both the new development and downtown Indianapolis. This project marks a major step in the city’s ongoing efforts to boost growth while preserving its historic landmarks.
