After a 2014 water crisis, a special election was called in Toledo, Ohio Tuesday to determine if Lake Erie should be granted the same rights as a person.

The vote passed easily, and the lake’s new rights allow citizens to sue on behalf of the lake when it is in danger of major environmental harm.

Serious pollution led to a water crisis in 2014 that left Toledo residents unable to use their tap water. Activists responded by pushing for the recent special election to grant rights to Lake Erie.
